I came to study at the University of Roehampton through clearing. I had been so confident of getting in to my first-choice university to study Biological Sciences that I hadn’t looked at any other options, so when I realised that I hadn’t been accepted I was full of so many emotions that I didn’t know what to do – my first piece of advice to anybody is to not be complacent.

I was lucky to have a good support network around me so it made the clearing process slightly easier. When I went to collect my results, my sixth form had set up a separate area for us to enter the clearing process and start calling universities. Roehampton was the second university I called and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to pick up the phone. The clearing ambassador calmed me down and offered me a place for Biological Sciences.

A few days after I applied and accepted the offer, a member of staff from the Life Sciences faculty emailed me to set up a meeting and campus tour before I joined. During this meeting the lecturer talked me through the course and asked me what I wanted to do after university.  From this one-to-one talk, I was advised to switch to Biomedical Science as I was more interested in human diseases and treatments. I was glad Roehampton offered me this time to properly think about what I wanted to do.

Make sure you have the numbers of your first and insurance choice universities, and of other universities that offer your subject. On the day of results The Guardian is always a good paper to pick up to look for clearing places, alongside the UCAS website. My final piece of advice is to keep calm and remember that everyone on the other side of the phone at Roehampton is there to help you.

My time at Roehampton was the best three years of my life and I am so glad that I went through clearing. I was given so many opportunities to help me reach my potential and I graduated with a first-class degree in Biomedical Science. I went on to work for the University as a Learning and Teaching Project Officer for two years, before I started my Clinical Project Coordinator role for a pharmaceutical firm.
