Roehampton offers plenty of ways for you to enjoy student life away from the textbooks. With over fifty societies there is something for everyone, alongside resources and systems in place for anyone wishing to develop new societies or activities. All run by student committees who volunteer to bring these activities to you, they are open to all students, regardless of living on or off campus, or being a fresher or final year student.
Through societies, campaign and peer support groups, the Students’ Union empowers students to make change in their communities. All of these groups run alongside students’ studies and provide a wide array of opportunities to learn new skills, meet more people and have fun. With so many new people to get to know, it’s a great idea to filter through the masses and go straight to a group that will house like-minded people. It’s an experience not to be missed, and will be one of the most exciting and memorable parts of your university experience.
How to get involved
- Look through the societies website.
- (Re)Fresher’s Fair – chat to as many different societies as possible. Missed September’s Fresher’s Fair? Don’t worry, you can join societies throughout the year, and Re-Fresher’s Fair is in January.
- Go along to as many different introduction events as possible – your first two weeks are for new experiences and meeting people. Afterwards, you can decide which societies you will officially join.
- Send a message to societies – if you’re nervous about going alone, all societies are more than welcoming to new students, and will often meet with you beforehand to go together.
- Ask your academic lecturers – many departments have a linked academic society to organise socials, activities and talks. It’s a great way to learn more about your subject and get to know your course mates better.
- Can’t find what you’re interested in? Set up a society yourself! Start by popping in to the RSU for a chat, and see where your idea can take you.
Getting involved in a society is arguably the best way to meet new people, gain new skills and make the most university life – so don’t hesitate to sign up.
