10 of my favourite London street food outlets | Beyond Roehampton

Everyone often seems to be short of time in London; it comes as no surprise that street food outlets are constantly popping up all over the city. Quick and easy for when you’re on the go, the selection of cuisines available in street food form is incredible – from Greek to Japanese via French and German. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourite places to grab a bite to eat.

10. Olive Oil & Oregano

Based in Stratford’s Westfield, this eatery’s menu comprises of authentic Greek dishes that are perfect for a pit-stop lunch on a shopping trip. From souvlaki and gyros to grilled aubergines with feta, you’re sure to find something to suit your tastebuds. I cheat the menu and ask for a Greek pita wrap with halloumi (you might spot a trend soon).

9. Kebab King

Experiencing the delights of Kebab King is a Roey rite of passage. After a Wednesday night at Le Fez or a Saturday evening trip to Revs, Kebab King will always be there to answer the call for a late-night snack. Offering a surprisingly expansive menu for such a destination, the staff are always friendly and keen for a chat while you wait for you food to be freshly prepared. Halloumi is my go-to – either in a wrap or burger.

8. Temple of Seitan

A fully vegan haven, serving chicken-inspired fast-food using seitan. Based in Camden and Hackney, this premise opened to rave reviews. Usually queuing out of the door and around the corner, Temple has become known for delivering cruelty-free fast-food, without scrimping on flavour. A must-visit for carnivores and herbivores alike – winner, winner, chicken dinner! Order a burger, but don’t miss out on the popcorn bites.

7. Greek2Go

A Roehampton favourite often to be found at Market Days and Open Days, this souvlaki stall is a permanent fixture at Berwick Street Market. With halloumi, chicken and pork options in a variety of sizes, these satisfying wraps never fail to deliver on flavour and satisfaction, and can be customised to suit each customer’s needs. I always go for a halloumi wrap with all the extras – olives, onion, tomatoes, oregano, salad, homemade tzatziki… delicious!

6. Knot Pretzels

Pretzels are always a winner in my eyes, and these fresh ones from Clapham Junction Station are a real treat. Even on a rushed journey, there’s always time for a stop to buy the cheese and smoked paprika pretzel. Great prices, friendly staff and mouthwatering, filling food combine to make this a perfect pit-stop on an otherwise (probably) stressful journey.

5. Creme de la Crepe

Crepes are a classic quick lunch that always seem to deliver and this Covent Garden staple offers crepes at their finest. Their menu is full to the brim with interesting flavours that surpass the standard ham and cheese combo. Available to eat in or takeaway, I usually choose the Italian Job (goats’ cheese, homemade pesto, sunblushed tomatoes and rocket).

4. East Sheen Microbakery

Growhampton staple Julia is our infamous bread lady, selling bread-based treats in Digby Square each Thursday. Each week Julia bakes a seasonal selection of bakery items such as focaccia, cinnamon rolls, tarts and her signature sourdough. Based in her home microbakery in East Sheen, Roehampton’s Market Days are lucky to have her baked goods.

3. Doughnut Time

Who doesn’t love a doughnut?! These extravagant beauties take deep-fried dough to another level. With plenty of vegan offerings, the Doughnut Time team have baked some impressively imaginative creations, tickling all fancies at their three sites across London. Robert De N’Oreo, Houston We Have Biscoff and I Make Honey Moves are all highlights, for the names as much as the flavour.

2. The Green Dough

Originally called Smile Cookies, this Camden-based stall helps the planet with every tub of cookie dough purchased! Vegan, gluten-free and packed full of flavour, these customisable cookie dough cups will leave you feeling guilt-free, as the company have so far planted over 14,000 trees from the proceeds. As much as they are delicious, I would advise to steer clear of the large cup, as even the medium one is hard to finish!

1. SushiDog

I can’t recommend this place enough! Based in Westfield White City, a short journey on the 72 from campus, this outlet makes sushi burritos and bowls that are fresh, easy to eat and delicious. Each offering is truly customisable – you direct the staff as they make your dish. If you’re not a fan of raw fish, they also offer prawn tempura, beetroot and chicken katsu. Each roll (burrito) is £6.95 and each bowl (poke) is £7.95 – a cheap way to experience delicious sushi. My favourite is a roll with prawn tempura, crispy onions, avocado, edamame beans, teriyaki, sriracha mayo, soy sauce and sesame seeds.

Like the sound of these places? I have mid-range and fancy restaurant lists too…
