My time at Roehampton is coming to an end, and whilst I know that the Roehampton community will always be here to support me in my career and future, it will feel strange to no longer see the sights and faces I know so well every day.
Throughout my three years studying for a BA (Hons) Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, I have always felt acutely aware of my luck to be part of a university where the Vice-Chancellor is not some sort of mythological figure, separated from the realities of the students he represents. Instead, Paul O’Prey has maintained a constant presence throughout the circles of staff and students that Roehampton is comprised of, ensuring that he is a tangible contact, ready and willing to hear the voices of students.
As a programme rep during my first year and a department rep over the past two years, having the opportunity to attend meetings with members of the senior team, including the Vice-Chancellor, has been beneficial to those I have represented and the wider Roehampton community, and is a privilege that I have never taken for granted. By speaking directly to those in charge, I have been able to contribute to enacting change and bettering the student experience, an achievement facilitated by the Vice-Chancellor.
One of Roehampton’s many strengths is its eagerness to listen to and be led by its students, an ethos championed by Paul. To honour his legacy, the University of Roehampton are launching a new scholarship in Paul’s, and his wife Pilar’s, name. The Paul and Pilar O’Prey Scholarship will enable more students to benefit from the exceptional education and experience that Roehampton provides.
Roehampton is an incredible community, and one that always remains special to those who have moved on after time here. Over the past fifteen years, and the past three that I have been here, Roehampton has continued to develop and excel, proving itself time and time again. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
