Formula One driver, Oscar Piastri has been preparing for the 2024 Formula One season with some physiological testing at the University of Roehampton. Piastri has been working with Roehampton’s Dr Chris Tyler since gaining his Formula One seat, frequently using our Sport and Exercise Physiology Laboratory.

As part of our Sports and Exercise Physiology Lab, we have an environmental chamber for students and staff to carry out research on exercise performed in hot and cold environments, testing a wide range of environmental conditions. The laboratory is equipped for testing various physical and sporting activities including lactate threshold and VO2 max. There is also physiological assessment equipment, a wide range of respiratory variables including portable and fixed online gas analysis, multiple Douglas bag set-ups, spirometry for pulmonary function and blood parameters. The lab also includes a BodPod which measures an individual’s body composition.
Dr Chris Tyler explains the physical demand of Formula One and how he has been supporting Oscar with physiological testing since gaining his seat at McLaren. Piastri has undertaken regular heat acclimation sessions in our environmental chamber and recently visited for some pre-season fitness testing.
Dr Chris Tyler will continue to support Oscar during the 2024 season here at Roehampton.
