Coeliac Awareness Month

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, treated by eating a gluten free diet. The charity Coeliac UK highlight 1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease, but only 36% are diagnosed. Coeliac UK aims to find those people and get them on the road to recovery. Check out the British Dietetic Association info on Coeliac disease and gluten-free diet.

Researchers at the University of Roehampton, led by Dr Yvonne Jeanes, are passionate about improving the healthcare provision for people living with coeliac disease and improving the their overall health and wellbeing. We have informed government policy on the importance of gluten free foods being available on prescriptions and the cost of gluten-free foods. Telephone clinics and webinars are effective in management of coeliac disease, though we highlight the need for in person appointments remain important for some people with coeliac disease.

A study published on 7th May highlighted the varied provision of healthcare reviews across the UK, with only 26% having annual reviews, despite NICE guidance all should be offered an annual review (Jeanes et al 2024).

Adults with coeliac disease:

“I don’t know how I am managing my illness. I do worry I should pay it more attention”

“Whilst online support is useful it is not a substitute for seeing a health care professional.”

The study suggests the limited NHS resources should be targeted towards patients with the most need for support to enable successful disease management.

Adults with coeliac disease may benefit from probiotics, and particularly their cholesterol lowering impact. Dr Adele Costabile is inviting adults with coeliac disease who are interested in knowing their cholesterol level and would consider joining a study to see if a probiotic supplement can help them. Students studying on our excellent MSc Clinical Nutrition and MRes Nutrition and Metabolic Disorders have been involved in the research for their Dissertation or Research Projects.

The University of Roehampton changes lives by helping our students to develop the confidence, knowledge and values they need for a successful and fulfilling life. We produce world-class research that helps us understand the world and change it for the better.
