Tharusha’s Journey as a Computer Science Student at Roehampton

Hi there! I’m Tharusha Sachindra Peramunagamage Don, a second-year Computer Science student at the University of Roehampton, soon to start my third year. I’m excited to share my experiences and insights from this incredible journey.

Why did you choose to study this degree at Roehampton?

I chose Roehampton because the course content aligns perfectly with what I was looking for in my education. The university’s focus on practical application and real-world skills was a significant factor in my decision. One of my favourite aspects of this course is how the modules are designed to engage us actively, allowing us to learn concepts that we can directly apply in real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach makes learning enjoyable and immensely practical.

What software/ facilities do you use for your degree?

In my studies, I use various applications, with Visual Studio Code being my primary tool for coding in Python. I also work with C#, SQL, and C++, which are essential for different projects and assignments. These tools help me to enhance my programming skills effectively.

What skills make a good Computer Science student?

To excel as a Computer Science student, it’s crucial to have a solid understanding of problems and solutions. Being able to address issues efficiently while using minimal resources is a skill that I strive to develop continuously.

Can you tell me about any activities/projects/field trips you are involved in through your degree?

I was part of the robotics team that secured second place during last year’s employment week. Currently, I’m working on a side project that uses machine learning to predict energy generation. These experiences have not only expanded my knowledge but also allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in exciting ways.

How has Roehampton supported you?

Roehampton has provided numerous opportunities, such as employment weeks where we can meet potential employers. These events have been invaluable for networking and gaining insights into various career paths. The lecturers are exceptionally kind and always willing to explain concepts until we fully understand them, making a significant difference in my learning experience.

Are there any particular ways that your degree has helped you academically and professionally in finding an internship/ placement etc?

My degree has been helpful in developing my technical skills. The positive feedback I received from companies I applied to reflects the solid foundation I gained through my studies at the university. I also make good use of the careers services to enhance my learning experience and prepare for future opportunities.

The flexible course timetable has allowed me to explore extracurricular opportunities and even maintain a part-time job. This balance has enriched my university experience and provided valuable lessons beyond the classroom.

Do you have a favourite spot on campus?

I commute to university by train and then take the free shuttle bus service from Barnes station. While I love the journey, I also appreciate the beautiful campus. My favourite spots include the third floor of the library for focused study and the common area in David Bell, which makes it easy to get to classes quickly.
