UCAS explained | All you need to know about applying to university

At Roehampton, we know the UCAS application process can be daunting, stressful and nerve wracking. We have created a simple guide that gives you the information you need (with a few helpful tips) to make the process of applying as straight forward as possible.

1. When can I start my application to go to university in 2025?

2025 entry applications can be started now and submitted to UCAS.

To get a full understanding of the UCAS application process, join our webinar on 6 November 2024, 5.30 – 6pm. We will go through the whole process, sharing valuable tips and tricks to help you navigate UCAS with confidence.

2. 2025 application deadline

The deadline to apply for most courses is 29 January 18:00 (UK time).

3. Getting offers

When your chosen universities review your application, some may invite you to an interview to help them decide whether to make you an offer. There are different offers a university may give you:

  • A conditional offer, this means you have a place, as long as you meet the requirements (usually exam results).
  • An unconditional offer, this means you have secured a place without having to meet any further requirements.

Offers come through at different times so please don’t worry if you don’t hear back immediately or if your friends have heard back before you.

TIP- Write a pros and cons list for each university you get an offer from, compare these lists to narrow down your decision and make it a bit easier for yourself when it comes to choosing a university.

4. Replying to your offers

If you received an unconditional offer, you can choose to confirm your place immediately. If your offers are conditional, you can pick your top two universities. The two types of reply you can make are:

  • Firm acceptance, this is your first choice university.
  • Insurance acceptance, this is your back-up university choice.

With a conditional offer, you will find out on results day if your exam results are high enough for the university to confirm your place.

TIP- When replying with an insurance acceptance, go for a university you are still happy to go to, but make sure it has lower offer conditions.

5. UCAS Extra opens

Don’t worry if you didn’t receive any offers or maybe you rejected the offers you did receive, you can add an extra choice from 26 February 2025.

We have a webinar on 27 February 2025, 5.30 – 6pm, that will tell you all you need to know about UCAS Extra.

6. Automatic entry to clearing

If you submit an application after 18:00 (UK time) on the 30 June 2025, it will be automatically entered into clearing.

7. UCAS Extra closes

4 July 2025 is the latest date to add an extra choice.

8. Clearing Opens
