The Law Society took a group of Roehampton law students on an unforgettable trip to the UK Supreme Court- the highest court in the country. This tour was an opportunity to connect with the heart of the judiciary, see the law in action, and explore the courtrooms where some of the most critical legal decisions are made.

Why did we organise this trip?
We wanted to give students the chance to experience the UK Supreme Court firsthand, making it more than just an academic subject. This trip was designed to inspire students and deepen their understanding of the Court’s pivotal role in shaping legal principles. Seeing the workings of the judiciary in person allows students to see how abstract legal concepts come to life in the real world.
But it was not just about academics. A key goal of the trip was to foster connections between students across all year groups. The trip created an excellent opportunity to network, build relationships, and share experiences within the Law Society.
What did we do and what did we see?
Our group toured the iconic UK Supreme Court, diving into its three distinctive courtrooms. Each one told its own story:
- Courtroom 1: Grand and traditional, this room reflected the Court’s rich history.
- Courtroom 2: An elegant, modern design made this space feel contemporary and forward-thinking.
- Courtroom 3: This courtroom holds the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, adding a unique aspect to our experience.
One of the most special moments of the trip was visiting the exhibition area, where we had the privilege of seeing one of the twelve ceremonial gowns worn by Supreme Court Justices. It was a powerful reminder of the history and prestige tied to the Court. Throughout the day, we learned not just about the history of the Supreme Court, but also its essential role in the UK justice system.

How has this trip helped with our studies?
This trip gave us an invaluable, real-world perspective on the UK’s highest court. We now have a deeper appreciation of the Court’s role in interpreting and upholding the law. The experience also provided insight on the decision-making processes of the Justices and the critical cases that come before them.
For many of us, the visit bridged the gap between theory and practice- bringing legal concepts from textbooks to life in a meaningful way. It is moments like these that make studying law feel more tangible and relevant. For those of us dreaming of working in similar legal environments, the trip also provided an inspiring glimpse into the future.
What were the highlights of the trip?
It is hard to pick just one highlight, but here are a few of the standout moments:
- The ceremonial gown: Seeing the gown worn by the Supreme Court Justices on display was an unforgettable experience. It made the Court’s rich history feel even more personal.
- The courtrooms: Exploring the unique designs and functions of each courtroom was eye-opening, showing us how each space serves a different purpose in the judicial process.
- The history & operations: Learning about the Court’s past while observing its modern-day practices was both fascinating and inspiring.
Key takeaways from the trip
This trip left us with more than just memories. We gained a new level of respect for the Supreme Court’s role in upholding justice and shaping UK law. We also saw how the Court has managed to balance tradition with modernity, adapting over time while maintaining its core values.
On top of the academic benefits, the trip emphasised the importance of community within the Law Society. Students from all year groups came together to share this incredible experience, strengthening our bond and sense of belonging within the society.
This trip marked a significant milestone in our development as future legal professionals. Visiting the UK Supreme Court was not only an invaluable learning opportunity but also a memorable experience that has left us with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration as we continue our legal journey.
