Spotlight on 3rd year student Charlotte (Lottie) Cleminson: From Roehampton’s dance studios to shaping the next generation of performers

Meet Charlotte Cleminson, better known as Lottie, a passionate Roehampton BA Dance student whose journey blends creativity, commitment, and community spirit.

Now in her final year, Lottie has thrived in Roehampton’s tight-knit dance department, gaining both the artistic training and teaching experience that will soon see her step into classrooms as a dance educator.

Why I Chose to Study Dance at Roehampton

Growing up with a love for dance, Lottie was searching for a university that could nurture both her technique and her creative expression. Roehampton stood out for its breadth of practitioners, range of styles, and practical facilities.

“I was really drawn to how varied the dance techniques were. I knew it would help me develop my own style. And the studios are incredible; the sprung floors, heated in winter, make a huge difference when you’re dancing every day.”

Being just 20 minutes from central London also sealed the deal. The chance to take classes at world-renowned spaces like Pineapple Studios and The Place added a professional edge to her training.

What made my time at Roehampton so special

For Lottie, Roehampton isn’t just a place to learn, it’s a space to belong.

“The community here is amazing. Our department is small but so supportive, and you build real connections with tutors. I always felt like I could talk openly with them, not just about my studies, but anything I was going through.”

That sense of belonging has carried her through the demands of the course; from long rehearsals to theoretical modules exploring the history and politics of dance.

Highlights of my degree

Lottie found the perfect blend of practice and theory at Roehampton.

“I love how the course balances practical technique with academic exploration. We’re not just dancing, we’re thinking deeply about what dance means and where it comes from.”

Standout modules like “Teaching Artist” gave her the skills and confidence to teach. The accompanying 10-week placement allowed her to lead classes at Ibstock Place School, working with GCSE students on both technique and performance.

Real-world experiences that shaped my journey

Lottie didn’t just learn in the classroom; she seized every opportunity to grow beyond it:

  • Led a two-hour university-style workshop for GCSE dancers at Ibstock Place School
  • Joined Third Row Dance Company, a student-led company that partners with professional choreographers
  • Took on a leadership role as Rehearsal and Managing Director of Third Row in her final year
  • Attended gallery visits and exhibitions like the Whitechapel Gallery and V&A Museum during “teach-out” sessions, creatively adapted during strike periods

“Running the company this year has been a huge learning curve. It’s extra work, but it’s helped me become more confident in leadership and time management.”

Where I am now (and how Roehampton helped me get here)

Now preparing for graduation, Lottie is ready to take the leap into teaching. She’ll be returning home to earn her PGCE/QTS qualification, aiming to teach dance at secondary level.

“My Roehampton experience helped me realise that teaching is where my heart is. I’ve learned how to structure classes, work with different age groups, and really connect with students.”

She credits tutors like Tamara, Clarisse, and Lr for their constant support and for encouraging her creativity, guiding her dissertation, and helping her grow as an artist and educator.

Top tips for Roehampton students today

 Lottie’s advice is clear:

“Embrace everything. Even if you’ve never done much contemporary dance, don’t worry. You’ll be amazed how quickly you grow here.”

She also stresses the importance of showing up:

“Dance isn’t like a lecture-based course. If you miss a class, you’re missing material you’ll be assessed on. It’s run like a professional studio; you must stay on top of things.”

What I’d do differently looking back

Looking back, Lottie has few regrets. Her only reflection?

“Maybe stress a bit less. Everything works out. You just need to trust the process, stay organised, and let yourself enjoy the ride.”

Career highlights so far

Beyond her teaching placement and leadership roles, Lottie’s proudest moments have been performing and collaborating with peers.

“There’s something so powerful about standing on stage after weeks of rehearsal, knowing you created something together. That’s what I’ll remember most.”

She’s also proud of keeping up part-time work during university breaks, balancing her passion for dance with the practicalities of life.

Favourite Roehampton memories

From on-campus showcases to nights out at NOVA, Lottie has made the most of student life.

“NOVA nights at the union bar were the best. You’d see everyone; especially in first year. And being close to places like Putney and Kingston meant great nights out without spending a fortune.”

Summer days on Froebel lawn, surrounded by friends and music, also stand out as cherished memories.

Living on campus

Lottie has lived on campus all three years, starting in Elm Grove, then moving to the quieter Willow halls in final year.

“Elm Grove was always buzzing, but Willow feels more like home. I love that it has sofas in the kitchen, it makes everything feel cozier.”

Campus life and facilities

You’ll most often find Lottie in the library, dance studios, or catching up with friends at the Union bar.

“The library’s actually fun when you go with friends, you can book a study room and help each other out. And the bar is great for day-time hangouts or a pint of snakebite at night!”

Final thoughts

From the studios of Roehampton to shaping her own future classroom, Charlotte Cleminson is proof that with dedication and heart, dance can become more than performance, it can become purpose.

As she prepares to graduate and pass her passion on to the next generation, her story is a vibrant celebration of creativity, community, and courage.
