From science graduate, to teacher, to wellness entrepreneur, Ahsan Sultan’s career has taken a unique and inspiring path. Since completing his PGCE Science at the University of Roehampton, he has combined his passion for education with a strong focus on nutrition and holistic health. We caught up with Ahsan to hear about his Roehampton experience, his career journey, and the innovative health food business he now leads.

Why did you choose to study PGCE Science at Roehampton, and what did you enjoy most about your time there?
After completing a degree in science, I found the available job opportunities didn’t quite align with my interests. Teaching stood out as a meaningful alternative, and after some time spent gaining classroom experience, I knew it was the right path for me at that time. I chose Roehampton because of its strong reputation for teacher training and its well-regarded PGCE programme.
During my time at Roehampton, I really appreciated the quality of the lecturers and the opportunity to teach in a variety of schools. Experiencing different educational settings gave me valuable insight into working with children from diverse backgrounds. It was both enriching and eye-opening.
What were the highlights of the course—both academically and practically?
The breadth of knowledge I gained was fantastic. It wasn’t just learning how to teach; it was about understanding the whole educational environment, from lesson planning to classroom management and student development. It helped me develop practical skills that were directly applicable in real-world teaching environments.
Although my PGCE meant splitting time between university and school placements, one experience that really stood out was a day visit to a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school. Seeing such dedicated teachers in action was humbling and inspiring. It left a lasting impression on how I view inclusive education.
What are you doing now, and how has your PGCE supported your current role?
I currently run The Raw Kitchen UK, an online health food business, and work as a certified nutrition and wellness coach. My day-to-day work now involves a different kind of teaching—educating clients about nutrition, guiding them through healthy lifestyle changes, and creating informative content.
The skills I developed during my PGCE—such as communication and planning have proven to be highly transferable. Whether it’s delivering pop-up stalls at events, writing resources, or coaching one-on-one, my background in education continues to play a key role in my work.
Tell us more about The Raw Kitchen—what inspired its creation?
I created The Raw Kitchen UK to make high-quality, nutrient-rich, and unprocessed foods more accessible to individuals looking to improve their health through better nutrition. The business focuses on sourcing products from trusted suppliers who prioritise sustainability and quality, including natural honey, bee products, and superfoods.
The goal is to promote a proactive approach to health—encouraging people to take small, daily steps that support long-term wellbeing. As a certified nutrition and wellness coach, I also offer guidance and resources to help people better understand how food can support their health goals. What’s been your proudest career moment so far?
Starting my own business, The Raw Kitchen UK, is without a doubt, my proudest achievement. It’s a reflection of everything I’ve been through—my academic background, my health journey, and my passion for helping others.
Looking back, what would you do differently—and what advice would you give current students?
Time management is everything. If I could go back to university, I would plan my time more effectively to take full advantage of both academic opportunities and student life. That’s my advice to current students: stay organised, plan ahead, and strike a balance between hard work and making the most of your university experience.
Ahsan’s story shows how teaching skills can be incredibly versatile—extending far beyond the classroom. His journey is a powerful reminder that your degree can be the foundation for many different paths.
