Real law, real impact – my experience of working in Roehampton’s Law Clinic

Elif, LLB Hons Law

I knew Roehampton was my place, when I visited an open day and instantly could see myself studying here. Having heard about Roehampton’s Law courses and the opportunity to work in their on-campus Law Clinic, where you could get real legal experience that counted towards your degree, was a game-changer.

Clinic work that was immersive and rewarding

Working at Roehampton’s Law Clinic exceeded my expectations – it was hands-on, intense and more meaningful than I ever could have imagined. It was stressful at times, but it taught me how to balance study and work and once I found my flow, I enjoyed it so much.

Some of the most impactful cases were where I helped clients draft their witness statements, and it felt deeply personal and powerful. I was writing things that could really change their life and that really hit home with me.

Learning through doing

I really enjoyed the practical experience; it helped the law make sense to me. Doing research reports and exams really doesn’t compare to actually helping someone.

I learnt how to navigate Westlaw and legal databases, to drafting advice letters with help from my mentors. I had to learn to research on my own, but I always had support if I needed it. This helped me build my confidence and resilience, especially in areas I hadn’t really studied.

Support that sticks

I had a network of academic and professional mentors who really went above and beyond for me. I never felt stupid asking questions; they were always on hand to help. The Law Clinic Manager; became my go-to for guidance. Her support helped me, and the team navigate unfamiliar legal territory with confidence.

Studying the Bar course is my next step

I’m planning to study the Bar course in September, and thanks to my time at Roehampton, I’m ready. Before my time at the law clinic, I was scared I wouldn’t keep up, but now I feel confident. Even when I had difficult client interactions, I persevered and believed in myself. I gave so much time to cases and the support I gained was everything to me.

My advice to future law students

Choose Roehampton and get involved! I found Roehampton so supportive, and they really prepare you for the real world.

It’s nervous at first starting university, but you just end up talking to people and that’s how I found my best friends. I also work as a student ambassador, which has helped me meet people and build my confidence.

The University of Roehampton changes lives by helping our students to develop the confidence, knowledge and values they need for a successful and fulfilling life. We produce world-class research that helps us understand the world and change it for the better.
