Planning to live on campus? It’s now time to look forward to university and prepare for the move in September. It’s surprisingly easy to forget the essentials, so we’ve come up with a list of things to pack for university in 2020.
Clothes, shoes and hangers
Deciding on which clothes to bring is possibly the most difficult part about packing to go anywhere. We suggest leaving behind the things you know you won’t be wearing in the next few months, as you can always swap clothes out on your next trip back home. Although the weather in the UK is pretty unpredictable, it’s safe to assume that you’ll need to wrap up warm during the start of your university journey.
The next thing to think about is bedroom essentials. The most important thing to remember is bedding, however it’s also nice to bring along a few home comforts such as photos and décor to make you feel more at home.
If you’re going to be living in self-catered accommodation, you will need to bring along your own kitchenware. The basics include plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery, utensils, pans and a baking tray, as well as anything else you think you might need. Before bringing anything along, it’s always a good idea to check whether anything is already included.
Whether you’re lucky enough to have an en suite or will be sharing a bathroom with your flatmates, there are items you will need to bring along such as your own towels, toiletries and whatever else you may need.
There are so many documents which you may not think are important at the time, but you never know when you might need them. It’s a good idea to get a folder together of the following documents and bring them along; ID, Passport, National Insurance Number, NHS Medical Card, Prescriptions, Accommodation Contract, Student Finance Documents, Student Discount Cards, Bank Cards.
One thing you don’t want to forget is your electrical items which could include your phone, laptop, chargers, headphones and anything else. An extension cable is always handy to bring because it limits the amount of plug sockets you need to find around your room. If you’re a gamer and you’re struggling for space to bring your PC or console, remember we have a state-of-the-art esports arena open to all students throughout the year.
It’s a good idea to stock up on non-perishable food items and bring them along with you on your move in day, as this will make your first food shop much easier. These could include tinned foods, tea, coffee, rice, pasta and cereals.
Personal Safety items
As we continue to control the spread of COVID-19 it will be essential to pack certain items to keep you safe when out-and-about. You’ll need to bring a face-mask or two, hand-sanitiser for your room, and anti-bacteria wipes to clean surfaces and frequently used devices. You can find out more about the safety measures being taken on campus here.
There are always a few miscellaneous items to bring along which you may never have thought of yourself, but never know when it could come in handy. A few of our favourites are; first aid kit, umbrella, playing cards, batteries, blu tac or pins, books and a mini toolkit.
Finally, don’t forget that the main reason you’re coming to university is to study. Bring along some study essentials such as notebooks, pens and whatever else may be required for your course specifically.
