Introducing the Bystander Intervention Team

In a commitment to fostering a secure and inclusive environment, Roehampton proudly presents the Bystander Intervention Team.

The Bystander Intervention Team is responsible for reinforcing the university’s zero tolerance stance on harassment, abuse and misconduct. The team attend late-night events to help foster safety and security to all students.

Meet the team!

Get to know the passionate individuals who make up the Bystander Intervention Team and discover their commitment to safety.

Jess Clayton (she/her) (MSc Forensic Psychology)

Fun fact: I’ve always wanted to work at a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica

Quote: “My passion lies in ensuring people feel secure and safe while out at night, whether they’re consuming alcohol or not. This involves providing a safe space for conversations about mental well-being, assisting individuals in getting back to their accommodation safely, and actively contributing to the prevention of misconduct”.

Riley Golding (she/they) (Primary Education)

Fun fact: I can play the flute

Quote: “Being a part of the Bystander Intervention Team is important to me as I am passionate about making our campus a safe space for everyone.”

Caitlin Mcfadyen (she/her) (Primary Education) 

Fun fact: I have a certificate in Scuba Diving from a holiday in Turkey.

Nafisa Nabi Rashmi (she/her) (HRM (placement year) 

Fun fact: Sad but truth is I am trying to remember my fun fact for two days! 

Quote: “I believe, we all should work on the issue we feel like need to be change the world, how about make the campus little bit safer to all? No matter what, problematic behaviour is not acceptable. It’s always good to see all the happy people enjoying their time at university”.  

Christian Moran (he/him) (second year of Psychology)

Fun fact: I’ve been in scouting over a decade  

Quote: I’m looking forward to being part of the team and making sure that everyone feels included and able to have fun”.  

Oli Ottaway, the Sexual Violence Prevention Officer (SVPO) and Bystander Intervention Lead Manager stated “The Bystander Intervention Team is an initiative that is very close to my heart. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to re-establish the project and feel very honoured to lead a team of such empathic, conscientious students.” 

The team is made up of Roehampton students who are trained to intervene safely in any problematic situation. These could include but are not limited to, sexual violence, harassment, intoxication, and mental health challenges. If you are ever in need of any support during an event, please speak with a member of the team (look out for the blue t-shirts!).
