Rhaishah’s experience studying Cyber Security at the University of Roehampton

Hey everyone, I’m Rhaishah, a Cyber Security student at Roehampton, and I’m excited to tell you why choosing this university is a fantastic decision for anyone interested in Cyber Security.

Why did you choose to study Cyber Security at Roehampton?

I chose to study Cyber Security at Roehampton because specialising in Cyber Security felt like a unique opportunity to distinguish myself in the field of computer science. One of the most exciting aspects of studying Cyber Security I find is digital forensics. I find it fascinating to uncover hidden files, identify patterns, and understand the various techniques used to conceal data on computer systems.

Additionally, Roehampton is equipped with great software and facilities, which have greatly enhanced my learning experience. Throughout my degree, I’ve worked with a variety of tools essential for Cyber Security. For digital forensics, I use Autopsy, FTK Imager, Veracrypt, and Hex editors. Security testing involves tools like Burp Suite and Zed Attack Proxy. Additionally, I’ve used Visual Studio Code, Draw.io, Wireshark, and Packet Tracer in various courses.

What extracurricular activities have you participated in during your time at Roehampton?

One of the best things about my course at Roehampton is the flexible timetable, which allows me to participate in various extracurricular activities, work part-time, and be part of fun societies like the Lego Society.

I’ve had some exciting experiences, such as representing Roehampton at the NCSC Innovators Challenge, where we created solutions for geolocation spoofing in the maritime sector. I also took part in the HW3B London Hackathon, where my team won second place by developing a recycling point that rewards users with NFT tokens.

Also, I enjoyed the robotics challenge, working with Raspberry Pi, and experimenting with machine learning. Roehampton hosts supportive events like Career Development Week and industry talks, which provide great networking opportunities with professionals.

These experiences have given me valuable skills and a competitive edge when applying for internships and placements.

When you’re not in class, what are some of your favourite things to do at Roehampton?

When I’m not in class, I love exploring all that Roehampton has to offer. Some of my favourite experiences include visiting Thorpe Park during freshers week, attending the Digby Fete, and enjoying walks around our beautiful, green campus with friends.

What is life like living on campus?

Living on campus in Elm Grove is fantastic since it’s close to all the amenities. I often study in the library and hang out at the Base for social activities, like meeting up with friends for Lego Society. The free shuttle bus service to Barnes Station is super convenient for commuting to work and exploring all the fun places London has to offer.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying Cyber Security at Roehampton?

If you’re thinking about studying Cyber Security at Roehampton, my advice is to stay curious and ask lots of questions. This degree perfectly balances theory and practical work. To succeed, being detail-oriented and patient is key—especially in areas like digital forensics, where you need to spot irregularities and sift through lots of data. Try repeating lab exercises after classes to really grasp the material. And don’t forget to make the most of your time at university—it goes by fast! After graduation, I plan to either join a graduate programme in Cyber Security or pursue a master’s degree in the field.
