At the University of Roehampton, London our Nutrition and Health students participated in a hands-on practical session focusing on the microscopic examination and identification of fungi using Lactophenol Cotton Blue (LPCB) staining.

This vital staining technique, which combines the clearing properties of lactophenol with the staining abilities of cotton blue, allowed students to observe the intricate structures of fungal organisms in food samples.

By integrating this method into our curriculum, we aimed to enhance the students’ understanding of fungal biology and its implications for food safety and health. The session provided a unique opportunity for students to develop their laboratory skills and apply theoretical knowledge in a practical context, reinforcing the importance of microbiological analysis in the field of food science and nutrition.
