My name is Mingma Sherpa, and I’m a third-year Computer Science student at Roehampton University. I’m excited to share my experience studying this degree and being part of the Roehampton community!

Why I chose Roehampton
I chose Roehampton because of its supportive academic environment and the resources it offers for finding placements and internships. The programme’s focus on real-world applications allows me to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
One of my favourite aspects of studying Computer Science here is the lecturers. They’re approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping students succeed. From offering one-on-one guidance to providing advice on student life, they go above and beyond to support us.
What also surprised me about Roehampton was the variety of extracurricular activities and the overall supportive atmosphere. Everyone—from professors to peers—is encouraging, making it an ideal environment for both academic and personal growth.
Industry-standard software, state-of-the-art labs, and career support.
The course provides hands-on experience with industry-standard software like Python, Java, MATLAB, and GitHub for version control. With fully equipped computer labs, we have all the resources we need for advanced coursework and collaborative projects. I spend a lot of time in the computer labs, which are well-equipped for my coursework, and I also frequently use the library and well-being services. The university offers a broad range of resources that have made my academic life easier.
Beyond technical tools, Roehampton offers an incredible support system. The Career Team has played a pivotal role in preparing me for the professional world. From CV workshops and mock interviews to guidance on finding placements, their support has been instrumental in building my confidence and career readiness.
To succeed in Computer Science, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, curiosity, and problem-solving. With the field constantly evolving, adaptability and a willingness to learn new technologies are key.
Beyond Academics: Clubs and Cultural Activities
The course has allowed me to participate in internships and exciting team projects. Beyond academics, I’m part of the skateboarding and archery clubs, which have been a great way to unwind. I’ve also had the opportunity to organise cultural events like Nepal’s New Year and the Dashain festival, which were deeply rewarding experiences. Some of my favourite experiences include working on these events and being active in various clubs. The campus offers a vibrant social life, which has made my university experience both fun and enriching.
Balancing Academics and Life
The timetable for my course is well-structured, giving me enough time to engage in extracurricular activities like dance classes and sports clubs. This balance has been crucial for maintaining a good work-life balance while excelling in academics.
Living on campus has been convenient, and the free Roehampton bus has been a lifesaver for getting to nearby grocery stores and train stations. It’s one of the many thoughtful services the university provides to make student life easier.
Career Aspirations and goals
Studying Computer Science at Roehampton has prepared me academically and professionally to pursue my career goals. My dream is to work as a software developer, creating applications that drive innovation and data insights. In the future, I hope to explore opportunities in fields like AI or cybersecurity.
