When I decided to study journalism, I knew it was the perfect fit for my career ambitions. I’m passionate about pursuing a future in journalism, particularly in music or sports, and I chose Roehampton because I wanted to enhance my skills and knowledge to make that dream a reality. By studying here, I’m gaining valuable insight into the world of journalism and preparing for a successful career in the industry.
Supportive Classmates and Friendly Lecturers
One of my favourite things about studying journalism at Roehampton is the supportive and friendly environment. My lecturers are approachable, always willing to offer guidance and answer any questions. What’s even better is that my classmates are all so kind, and it’s a pleasure to work with them. The collaborative nature of the course, with group workshops and in-class discussions, makes it easy to make lasting friendships, which is vital for successful teamwork.
Resources and Facilities at Roehampton
In terms of resources, I’ve been using Microsoft 365 apps like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneDrive to keep my work organised. The Roehampton Moodle page is also a key resource for accessing course content and submitting assignments. The classrooms are comfortable and conveniently located in the same building, making it easy for me to move between classes.
On campus, I often spend time at the David Bell Building for my lectures and seminars, the library for studying, and the Froebel Diner for lunch. I also love the Hive Café for the occasional treat. My absolute favourite spot on campus is the library, where I can study, work on my stories, or relax in between assignments. It’s the perfect environment to get things done, and I enjoy the food and drink available at the library café.
I also enjoy the sense of routine that comes with commuting to university. Taking the train to Roehampton every day gives me a chance to focus and get ready for the day ahead, and I also use the free Roehampton bus when needed.
Key Skills for Success
To succeed in the journalism course, time management and organisational skills are essential. Journalism can involve juggling multiple assignments and projects at once, so it’s important to stay on top of deadlines. Additionally, the ability to work independently and collaborate with others is crucial. Listening and taking good notes are also key skills, as there is a lot of information to absorb, but it all comes together if you stay focused and organised.
Exciting Projects and Opportunities
Throughout my degree, I’ve had the opportunity to work on some great projects. One of my assignments involved researching the importance of collaboration in the music industry, aiming to teach others this vital skill. I also worked on an assignment about teaching skills, where I had to explore how collaboration plays a significant role in the music business.
In addition, I’ve been involved in a few personal projects, like writing about my passions outside of university. One of my most memorable experiences was interviewing professionals in the field, such as musicians and sports figures, which has given me firsthand insight into the industry I hope to work in one day.
Roehampton’s Support for Students
Roehampton has been incredibly supportive throughout my studies. I have a Summary of Adjustments (SOA) that allows me to receive automatic extensions on assignments, which gives me peace of mind. Although I’ve only used it once so far, it’s reassuring to know that the university offers this flexibility. Additionally, I’ve been given helpful resources, like Dropbox links to slides and course materials, which I can refer to as needed.
Balancing Work, and Study, and Life
Roehampton’s flexible course timetable allows me to balance my studies with extra-curricular activities and part-time work. On days when I don’t have lectures, I can focus on my assignments, work on my writing, or take shifts at my part-time job in events and hospitality. Being able to choose my shifts around my studies has given me the flexibility I need to succeed in both areas.
Although I haven’t yet taken part in an internship or placement, Roehampton introduced me to Handshake, a platform with listings for internships, placements, and jobs that’s widely used by the university. Knowing it’s there gives me confidence that I’ll have access to industry opportunities when the time comes.
Favourite Memories
One of my favourite experiences at Roehampton was during Fresher’s Week. Despite catching a cold, I had a blast at the events and made some great friends. Another memorable moment was when I helped the Digby Lions sports team during a fixture. Even though I was sick and missed a training session, the team made me feel included, and I had the chance to support them during their win, which was a great experience!
Career Aspirations: Football Journalism
Looking ahead, my goal is to work in football journalism, writing articles and match reports for major media outlets like the Metro, BBC, or Sky Sports. I’m passionate about football, and the idea of combining my love for the sport with my career in journalism is a dream come true. I plan on starting my job search in my third year so I can hit the ground running after graduation.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed my time studying Journalism at Roehampton. The university has provided me with a great learning environment, supportive lecturers, and valuable resources to help me succeed. It’s a wonderful place to study, and I’m excited to see where my journalism journey takes me after graduation.
