Why Roehampton Was Perfect for My Journalism Degree | Liubov Linnyk

Hi, I’m Liubov Linnyk, a second-year Journalism BA student at the University of Roehampton. Choosing to study journalism here has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life, and I’d like to share my journey, insights, and experiences as a student in this vibrant programme.

Why I chose journalism at Roehampton

The Journalism course at Roehampton stood out to me because of its comprehensive structure and the incredible faculty, who bring extensive real-world journalism experience. For me, this was a clear sign of the course’s credibility and quality.

What I love about my course

One of my favourite things about this degree is its flexibility. The programme allows us to choose modules from other related courses, like digital media and film communications. This has given me a broader perspective and valuable experience in fields that complement journalism perfectly.

Roehampton has been incredibly supportive during my time here, especially when needed support with studying or accommodation. The staff are always here to help, which has made a huge difference to my university experience.

Skills, tools and software

Throughout my studies, I’ve had the chance to work with essential tools and software that are widely used in the journalism industry. Adobe programmes, Google Docs, Excel, and PowerPoint have been crucial for my coursework, helping me build practical skills that I know I’ll rely on in my future career.

To succeed in this field, I believe creativity, flexibility, and a deep curiosity about the world are essential. It’s also important to have a passion for discovering and sharing stories. These qualities have fueled my dedication to both my studies and the career path I’ve chosen.

Enriching opportunities

Roehampton offers so many opportunities to enhance the student experience. One of the most exciting is the study abroad programme I’ll be participating in during the summer of 2025. I’ll be heading to the USA for a semester as part of my degree, an experience I’m sure will broaden my horizons and deepen my understanding of journalism.

Additionally, I’ve been attending workshops, such as a recent one hosted by the BBC on sustaining a career in global broadcast media. I’m also eagerly looking forward to a BBC headquarters visit in January 2025.

Life on campus

As a student living on campus, the library has become my go-to spot for studying and focusing on my work. It’s also my favourite place on campus! When I’m not studying, I enjoy taking part in social events like Union Bar karaoke evenings – they’ve created some of my best memories here.

Preparing for the future

The university’s career and study abroad departments have been helpful in helping me apply for internships. Thanks to their guidance, I’ve successfully applied for a few opportunities and am gaining valuable work experience. The course timetable is also flexible enough to allow me to pursue a part-time marketing internship alongside my studies.

Looking ahead, I aspire to work as a journalist on an international stage. Whether as a reporter, feature writer, or broadcast journalist, I hope to work in the UK and the USA, as I dream of building a global career.

Advice for future students

If you’re thinking about studying journalism at Roehampton, my advice is simple: go for it! The teachers are amazing, and their support is second to none. You won’t regret making the decision to study here.

I’m incredibly grateful to my teachers and the university for all their support. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next! To find out more about this course please visit BA Journalism | University of Roehampton, London.
