A Day in the Life of a Third-Year Primary Education English Specialist Student at the University of Roehampton | Mo

Hi, my name’s Mo, and I’m a third-year Primary Education with QTS student. I am on the KS1/KS2 pathway and specialise in English. Outside of my course, I am the President of Roehampton Gaming and RPG Society and enjoy sharing some of my favourite games with society members.

By the end of November, we had completed our English and Maths core modules, and we are now focusing on science and wider curriculum subjects, alongside UPPP (Understanding Pedagogy and Professional Practice).

This is a day in the life of one of our wider curriculum days:

7:00 am – Waking Up and Preparing for the Day

I wake up to my alarm to get ready for university and make my packed lunch for the day. Usually, I prepare my lunch the night before; however, this week, I had joined the LGBTQ+ society trip to a cat café and fell asleep as soon as I got home!

8:35 am – Heading to Campus

I start walking to university in time for a Music seminar at 9:00 am. The walk only takes around 10 minutes, but I like to arrive early to give myself some time to settle down before the session starts. This week, we were discussing non-Western musical traditions and using tuned percussion instruments to compose short melodies.

10:30 am – Quick Break Before the Next Session

I take a quick hot chocolate break in Costa to warm up before heading over to the Student Medical Centre for an appointment. It’s very useful having the GP on campus, so I can fit in an appointment between seminars.

11:00 am – Art Seminar

I make it back just in time for my Art seminar, where we discuss diversity and inclusion in Art. We then get messy exploring different techniques with clay.

12:30 pm – Lunchtime Social

Myself and a group of friends head to the Union Bar to eat our lunches (and buy an extra portion of chips!) but mostly to hide from the cold.

1:30 pm – Food and Nutrition Seminar

After lunch, we have a D&T (Design and Technology) food and nutrition seminar where we get to design and make our own stir-fry. We also work in groups to devise some medium-term plans for food and nutrition.

3:00 pm – Computing Seminar

We have another 15-minute coffee break before our Computing seminar. In this session, we code using microbits and create lesson plans for how to use algorithms in different year groups.

4:30 pm – Early Finish and Gaming Society Setup

We have an early finish for the last seminar on a Friday, so I have time to buy a sandwich from the shop in Digby Square before heading to David Bell to set up for the weekly Gaming Society meeting.

6:20 pm – Gaming Society and Dungeons & Dragons

Usually, I stay at Gaming Society until the end of the meeting (9 pm), but this week, I left the meeting in the capable hands of the treasurer, as I had my fortnightly Dungeons and Dragons game that evening. I walk down towards Barnes Station and take the 337 bus to Putney, where my friend hosts the game.

9:30 pm – Relaxing After a Busy Day

After the D&D session, my friends give me a lift home, and I unpack my bag before jumping straight into bed after a long day and an even longer week.

Though full days of teaching can be tiring, I find wider curriculum days to be very practical and engaging. I always make sure to balance university work with societies and hobbies. This particular Friday was one of the busiest days I’ve had, but even with a full day of activities, joining my D&D game in the evening was the perfect end to the week and helped me chill out, ready for the weekend.
