Using learning, making an impact | Primary Education QTS

Hear from Lucy Garrad, a second-year trainee student teacher specialising in English Education, currently studying Primary Education (QTS) at the University of Roehampton.

Alongside studying Primary Education QTS at Roehampton, I have been a carer for Anna and other young people with a range of different special educational needs and disabilities for the last seven years. This is a big part of why I decided to train to be a teacher and aspire to work in a SEND setting once I have gained QTS.

A few weeks ago, we had an insightful lecture from the team at the Victoria and Albert museum. They provided us with thought provoking resources and information. They also mentioned the Young V&A and the sensory aspect of the museum and how it has been built for children. I knew this would be perfect for Anna, so we went to visit during half term.

It was absolutely amazing and incredibly sensory based, with so much for Anna to see and do. We began walking around and were immediately drawn to the mirrors and shining objects! We then enjoyed looking at the displays of well known and loved toys (Paddington was by far Anna’s favourite). Anna was also captivated by the sand trays, ball games and many other things.

This was a very enriching and enjoyable day out!

Anthony Barlow, Programme Leader for the BA Primary QTS programme said: “We are delighted that Lucy has taken her learning from the taught course and applied this directly. We are fortunate with many such connections we have with local institutions, which include the V&A. Thanks to David Houston, team leader for schools and colleges, and a former Roehampton graduate too, for his support.”

The University of Roehampton changes lives by helping our students to develop the confidence, knowledge and values they need for a successful and fulfilling life. We produce world-class research that helps us understand the world and change it for the better.
