One of the best ways to stand out to employers is by gaining real-world experience. At the University of Roehampton, placements, internships and employer connections are built into your university journey, not added on at the end.
Why work experience matters
Work experience – whether that’s a placement year, internship or volunteer opportunity – helps you develop your confidence, professional skills and give you a clearer understanding of how your degree will advance your career. Students who have returned after undertaking a placement are noticeably more confident, motivated and focused about their future.
Our Student Futures team will be able to support you with finding:
- A placement as part of your degree
- Flexible internships alongside your study
- Short-term placements
- Paid roles on campus and with local organisations
Personal support, every step of the way
Finding a placement can feel daunting, but you won’t do it alone. Our careers consultants will support you with your CV, cover letters and applications, and the placements team will be on hand to provide specialist guidance once you know what kind of opportunity you’re looking for.
Support is personalised and supportive, with one‑to‑one appointments in the Careers Hub where you can talk through dates, deadlines, industries and next steps.

- Networking events with Roehampton’s alumni and industry professionals
These experiences will help you understand the working world and feel more confident in approaching employers.
Seeing you grow
At Roehampton, we regularly see students transform through placements and internships – gaining professional and strong communication skills and clarity about their future. Some students return from placements with clearer goals, expanded networks and the confidence to apply for graduate roles straight after finishing their degree. Even discovering what isn’t right for you during a placement is valuable experience in itself too.
Start early
The biggest advice from our Student Futures team is simple: engage with the team early on, stay open-minded and take small steps. You don’t need a fixed five-year plan – just a willingness to explore opportunities and ask for support when you need it.
