Courtney’s journey as an Adult Nursing student at Roehampton

We spoke to Courtney Larkin-Wilsona second-year BSc Adult Nursing student at the University of Roehampton, about what it’s really like to study Nursing. From simulation suites and placements to the support she’s received throughout her degree, here’s her honest experience.

Why I chose Roehampton

When I was looking at universities, I wanted the best of both worlds: hands-on clinical training alongside a campus that felt welcoming and peaceful. While many universities are based in busy city centres, Roehampton’s green campus offers a close-knit community while still being within easy reach of central London. For me, it was the perfect balance of having somewhere calm to study while still being able to enjoy everything London has to offer.

Learning through simulation and placements

One of my favourite parts of the course has been the combination of simulation sessions and clinical placements. Using modern clinical simulation suites, I’ve been able to practise everything from taking vital signs to responding to emergency scenarios in a safe and supportive environment.

The simulation sessions have helped me build my confidence before going out on placement. Practising clinical skills with guidance from tutors and classmates means that when you’re working with real patients, you feel much more prepared.

Placements have been the highlight of my degree so far. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a positive difference to someone’s experience during what may be a difficult time in their life. Those moments remind me exactly why I chose Nursing.

Learning from experienced nurses

Another thing that has stood out is the support from the lecturers. Many of them are registered nurses with real clinical experience, so they bring practical knowledge into every session rather than simply teaching from a textbook.

From day one, they have encouraged us to think like future healthcare professionals. Whether it’s helping you master a clinical skill you’re finding difficult or simply checking in when things feel overwhelming, I’ve always felt supported both academically and personally.

More than just a degree

Nursing is a challenging course, so it’s important to choose a university that supports you throughout the journey. At Roehampton, I’ve felt encouraged not only to develop my clinical skills but also to grow in confidence and resilience.

Looking back, I’ve gained so much more than academic knowledge. I’ve built lasting friendships, learned from incredible placement experiences and developed the confidence to take the next steps towards becoming a registered nurse.

If you’re considering studying Nursing, I hope sharing my experience has given you a better idea of what life at Roehampton is really like. Hopefully I’ll see you in the clinical skills labs soon!
