From Student Ambassador to Marketing Intern: My Roehampton careers service success story

Leneshia Johnson Watkins, BA (Hons) Creative and Professional Writing with Journalism graduate

Me! A graduate and marketing intern at Roehampton University and that’s a big thanks to the careers service.

So let me take you on the journey of how I got here. An ambitious undergraduate enrolled at the university, getting a notification pop up on my screen ‘want to become a student ambassador: apply here’. Little did I know that was going to be the start of my journey through the Roehampton careers service.

As a student ambassador, I developed so many valuable skills including communication, presentation, teamwork and generating initiative. The role served its purpose in providing me knowledge and paid experience whilst studying. After my undergraduate degree, I continued onto my Masters, where I remained in my part-time position as an ambassador, but the year went so quick.

Through gaining the Chancellor’s Careers Award for achievement in the development of employability skills, abilities and knowledge. I was able to update my CV with the experience I gained, started submitting job applications, received interviews and rejections whilst battling with the upcoming lack of job stability in my life. Eventually I began closing in on my last shifts as a student ambassador and thought “wow after four years, my time at the university has come to an end”.

It wasn’t until a week later, where I received a message ‘paid internships exclusively for Roehampton Graduates’. At that point I knew that I could continue doing what I love tailored to my goals. Marketing Intern was one of those roles, so I did an interview and success.

I got the job!

This is the stability I was looking for and I’m excited for what the next 10 weeks will be for me and hopefully my journey becomes full-time in the Marketing department. To say the least, the Careers Service team are always putting out opportunities, networking events, placement years, and even further study. There are no limits to what you can do. The world is your oyster!

This was my journey and I’m excited to see yours too.
