Worried about budgeting? 7 ways to feel more confident about your finances at uni

Living in London for the first time and worrying about making your money last? You’re not alone. In this blog, we’ll share the support available at Roehampton to help you manage your finances and stay on track, so you can focus on making the most of university life.

1 – Reach out for chat

Settling into university life in London is an exciting new chapter, but you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Our friendly Nest team and Student Wellbeing Officers are here to offer practical, expert guidance on everything from budgeting and saving to navigating the cost of living. Whether you have a specific question or simply want to talk things through, we’re here to help you feel confident and supported.

2 – Join our mentoring scheme – RoeBuddies

Sometimes, it helps to talk to someone who’s been there before. We’ll match you with a RoeBuddy who has had similar experiences and can share their own budgeting tips as well as stories and things they wish they’d known when they first started. They’ll be someone you can get to know, ask questions and chat with as you settle into university life.

3 – See if you’re eligible for a scholarship or bursary

You don’t have to navigate university finances on your own. Our generous  scholarships and bursaries are here to provide extra support and help make your studies feel more manageable. Take some time to explore the funding available to you and check the eligibility criteria and deadlines. Applying early gives you time to consider your options and find out what support you could receive.

4 – Know extra help is available when you most need it – Student Hardship Fund and emergency loans

If you find yourself needing a little extra help during your studies, there are options available. Eligible students experiencing financial difficulties can apply once each academic year for either non-repayable support or a repayable loan, depending on their circumstances. These options are designed to provide some extra breathing room when unexpected costs arise, so you can focus on your studies.

5 – Discover our budget-friendly choices

  • Free on-campus parking
  • Free cycling facilities and e-bike hire on campus
  • Fully-equipped kitchens across campus – microwave, fridges and charging points
  • On-campus catering outlets offering daily affordable options
  • Good value rooms and gym on-campus

6 – Consider getting a part-time job

Wherever you are in your journey, our Student Futures is here to help you get started. Whether you’re looking for part-time work, hoping to gain experience or simply curious about what’s out there, you’ll find friendly, practical support both online and in person. Explore opportunities that fit around your studies, gain valuable work experience and develop essential skills to help you feel graduate-ready and prepared for the future-focused job market.

7 – Explore government funding

There may be additional funding available to help support your studies. If you’re a UK or US student, you may be eligible for government funding. If you’d like to find out more, come and speak to one of our friendly Student Wellbeing Officers. They can talk you through the funding available, provide more information and answer any questions you may have, helping you know what support could be available to you.

With the right support and a few simple steps, you can feel more confident about your finances and make the most of university experience.
