When I first arrived to the University of Roehampton, I was filled with mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness. A Master’s degree in the UK had been a dream, but the reality of a new academic culture, very different from the studying patterns I was accustomed to in my home country, was a major obstacle. It was in this critical transition phase that the Extended Masters program became my anchor, my guide and ultimately my greatest strategic advantage. I feel so honoured to be selected as a Brand Ambassador for this outstanding program, and I want to share my experience and help future students see the real value.

To say the Extended Masters is a ‘foundation’ is an understatement, it is the very core upon which a successful Master’s journey is built. Academic life in the UK is different. It is based around independent study, critical thinking and a particular way of writing and referencing in an academic way. This was revealed to me through the Extended Masters program. It was not what to study but how to study. The program has prepared me very well for the demands of a UK Master’s degree. This ranges from understanding assignment briefs and the rigorous process of submissions, to online learning platforms and library resources. Now, my past education was connected to my future academic goals so I was not just surviving my Master’s program but excelling in it.
In addition the English module was so much more than just a language course. It was a space to sharpen my professional and academic communicative skills. The professors were very encouraging and created a friendly environment for us to practice, make mistakes, and improve our skills. They were very helpful in ensuring that we were comfortable with the academic expectations and university culture. It was about finding my voice in a new academic context; more than grammar.
One skill that I have developed that is probably one of the most practical and long lasting is presentation and public speaking. It seemed that every module tutor had a hand in honing our ability to deliver an effective presentation. We learned how to tell a good story, how to make good visual aids, and how to present confidently. These skills saved my life during my Master’s, but they’re useful far beyond academia. These are the exact skills I will use to pitch business ideas, present at conferences and advocate for myself in the professional world.
I want to be clear: I would never refer to the Extended Masters as a “delay” to my Master’s. On the contrary, it is a powerful and strategic investment. It’s an investment of time and effort that pays exponential dividends in the form of better grades, deeper understanding, and a more rewarding Master’s experience. It provides you with the invaluable space to clarify your study goals, build unshakeable motivation and develop a clear roadmap for the year ahead.
My journey at the University of Roehampton has been an essential part of the Extended Masters program. It turned my anxiety into confidence, my confusion into clarity and my goal into a real, successful reality.” To anyone who is considering this road, I can tell you with 100% certainty, it’s the best decision you will ever make for your academic future. This is not just a program. This is your launch pad to success.
