Morteza’s Experience as a Computer Science Student at Roehampton

Hi! I’m Morteza Raeesdana, and I’m thrilled to share my experiences as a second-year Computer Science student at the University of Roehampton.

What is your favourite thing about studying for this degree?

I decided to study Computer Science at Roehampton because I wanted to delve into the academic side of IT after gaining a few years of professional experience. Roehampton’s emphasis on combining theory with practice appealed to me, and I felt it would provide the perfect environment for my growth. One of my favourite aspects of studying this degree is the time and space it offers to explore various technologies and techniques. This exploration is essential for enhancing my career effectiveness and deepening my knowledge in the field.

Also, the facilities at Roehampton are outstanding. The library is my favourite go-to study spot. It’s calming and inspiring, with plenty of spaces for students to focus. On days when I need to write code, I head to the labs in David Bell, which are well-equipped for hands-on learning.

What skills make a good Computer Science student?

In my opinion, strong communication and teamwork are crucial for any aspiring Computer Science student. These soft skills are incredibly important in the workplace, especially as an intern or new graduate, where collaboration is often key.

Can you tell me about any activities/projects/field trips you are involved in through your degree?

During my first year, I volunteered as my programme’s representative and participated in two hackathons where we built and programmed robots. With Professor Oge’s help, we formed a group to work on self-defined tech projects. This not only enhanced my learning but also was fun as it fostered teamwork and friendship while we worked together to create something innovative.

 How has Roehampton supported you?

The support from the employability team has been a game changer for me. Ross Logan introduced me to the Student Mentorship Scheme, which pairs students with industry professionals. This programme has broadened my career perspective and helped me build valuable connections. This led me to land an internship for the summer between my first and second year.

What is your favourite spot on campus?

I commute to campus and always keep an eye out for the free Roehampton bus, which makes my journey from Barnes Station convenient. There are many facilities on campus for commuting students. My favourite spot on campus is the benches around the lake behind David Bell. It’s a peaceful place where I can relax and appreciate the natural beauty of the campus. I also enjoy grabbing lunch at Digby Diner and the Union Bar.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying this degree at Roehampton?

If you’re thinking about studying Computer Science at Roehampton, remember that university is a unique opportunity to develop your skills. While professors will guide you, it’s ultimately up to you to take the initiative and make the most of these three years.

I’m grateful for the chance to study at Roehampton and to meet so many interesting people along the way. If you’re passionate about technology, this is a fantastic place to pursue your dreams! Looking to the future, I aim to become a software architect. This role requires learning various technologies and stacks, and I feel confident that I’m on the right track.

The University of Roehampton changes lives by helping our students to develop the confidence, knowledge and values they need for a successful and fulfilling life. We produce world-class research that helps us understand the world and change it for the better.
