Hi, I’m Casey, a final-year Journalism student at Roehampton. My time here has been transformative, filled with personal growth, career preparation, and plenty of memorable moments. Here’s a glimpse into my experience.
Why I Chose Journalism at Roehampton
When I chose to study Journalism at Roehampton, it was because of my love for writing and creating. I wasn’t entirely sure where I wanted to go career-wise, but journalism seemed like the perfect path to open up numerous opportunities for me.
The Highlights of My Course
One of my favourite aspects of studying journalism is how much I’ve grown—not just academically, but personally too. The degree has taught me invaluable skills for my career and everyday life, and it has significantly boosted my self-confidence. I don’t think I would have had these transformative experiences if I had pursued something else.
Throughout my studies, I’ve gained hands-on experience with a range of digital tools, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Audacity, Photoshop, Adobe, and Canva. Journalism today is a highly digital field, and while a notebook can be helpful, having a reliable laptop has been essential.
What It Takes to Succeed
Journalism is a degree that challenges you to adapt. Sometimes, your initial ideas won’t pan out, and you need to keep pushing forward. Being open-minded and willing to experiment with new things—even outside your comfort zone—is key. Skills like creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial, not only for Journalism but for any career.
Engaging Projects and Activities
My time at Roehampton has been full of enriching experiences. I’ve served as a student representative for my Journalism cohort, participated in the student newspaper, and joined a meditation class led by a Creative Writing lecturer. Currently, I’m the Treasurer of the Radio Society, where I also host my own radio show. Beyond university, I’ve written for a music magazine and completed a Social Media work placement with Wimbledon BookFest. These experiences have broadened my skills and allowed me to network within my field.
What Surprised Me About University Life
One of the biggest surprises for me at university was the level of independence expected. Unlike school or college, where someone might guide you, at Roehampton, you’re responsible for managing your own attendance, deadlines, and workload. This taught me self-discipline and how to manage my time effectively.
The support from my teachers has been incredible—they’re always approachable and willing to help, whether it’s during class, over email, or through one-on-one meetings. Although I haven’t personally used the wellbeing services, I appreciate their accessibility for students who might need them.
Campus Life and Favourite Memories
Though I’m a commuting student, Roehampton’s campus has become a second home for me. The library and the Hive Café are some of my go-to spots, and I’ve spent plenty of time in the radio studios at the David Bell Building. My favourite place, however, is Froebel Lake—it’s such a peaceful escape from the bustle of city life.
One of my fondest memories is hosting my radio show. It’s a creative outlet that has allowed me to develop skills and connect with others who share my passion. I’ve also made lifelong friends on my course, and I’m grateful for those connections.
Preparing for the Future
The Careers Team at Roehampton has been a huge help in guiding me toward professional opportunities. Through a work placement module, I was able to reflect on my experiences and the skills I’ve gained. The flexible timetable of my course has also allowed me to pursue extra-curricular activities and part-time work, maintaining a balance between academics and a social life.
After graduation, I hope to dive into music journalism, radio, or social media. While I don’t have concrete plans yet, I’m actively building my portfolio and exploring opportunities to kickstart my career.
Studying at Roehampton has been a life-changing experience. Even as a commuting student, I’ve made wonderful memories, grown as a person, and gained a clearer sense of where I want to go in life. The tools and opportunities provided by Roehampton have prepared me for an exciting future.
Advice for Future Students
If you’re considering studying Journalism at Roehampton, my advice is simple: Go for it! This degree will help you discover new career paths and learn so much about yourself. Take every opportunity to network, gain industry experience, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
