5 tips for your first year at Roehampton

Get some first-year tips from Leneshia, a BA Journalism student at Roehampton.

  1. Connect- it may seem daunting but reach out to your peers and make those connections. These are the people you’re going to be brushing shoulders with for the next three years.

  2. Be curious- your tutors, lecturers and module convenors are there for a reason. Be curious, ask those questions, and check out the support you can get. People tend to link university with ‘independence’ and ‘figuring it out by yourself’, but support is always available.

  3. Be an Ambassador- from the very beginning the ambassadors are there for you- they walk around in bright yellow hoodies and are equipped with knowledge about the university, societies, accommodation and more; as an ambassador myself, you are free to ask us anything. You can join the team and earn money as a student ambassador, gain skills and build confidence. #makemoneybetweenstudies

  4. Reach out- your mental health matters, university can be overwhelming, especially when entering a new environment. Our onsite mental health and wellbeing team is at your disposal-check in with them, talk, prioritise self-care and reach out for help when needed.

  5. It’s okay not to have it figured out- remember you don’t have to have it all figured out – It’s okay not to have it all figured out; there are opportunities for a gap year, study abroad, and later in the academic year, you can choose your following modules. We also have a careers team to help you decide what you want to do. Regardless, it’s a journey, and changing your mind is okay!

The University of Roehampton changes lives by helping our students to develop the confidence, knowledge and values they need for a successful and fulfilling life. We produce world-class research that helps us understand the world and change it for the better.
