Final-year BA Journalism student Izabell Bessell looks back on her time at Roehampton, sharing the top three highlights that have shaped her university experience 

1. St Martin in the Fields Event

My course gave me the chance to attend a few events during my studies, which enhanced my knowledge of journalism as well as helped me with future career options. In my first year of university, we were given the opportunity to attend the ‘Reporting on the Year of Elections’ event at St Martin in the Fields, London. This was an eye-opening experience as it made me more aware of my interest in politics and how I could incorporate that in my future journalism career. The event also provided networking opportunities in which we could discuss and ask questions to those who work in the journalism and politics field, as well as students from other universities. Without the invitation from Roehampton, we would not have been able to attend.

2. Visiting the BBC

My journalism class was given the opportunity to visit the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place, London. This was a great experience and gave me a valuable insight into how a major news organisation operates behind the scenes. I learned a great deal from this experience and had the opportunity to hear directly from professionals working at the BBC. It was especially valuable to receive advice and practical tips that will help me as I consider my future career prospects. The experience gave me a better understanding of the industry and inspired me to think more carefully about the path I want to take after university.

3. Transferrable skills

During my final year of studies, we learned how to use the software Adobe InDesign. Although challenging, I managed to get the hang of it, and I am now able to put this on my CV as well as use it for other projects outside of university. I used it in order to complete my final year project, which was a magazine. Making my magazine was a difficult but rewarding experience, and I really enjoyed the creative freedom I had throughout my project. My final project enabled me to get hands on experience with every step of what actually goes into producing a magazine.
