I’m Izabell, a final-year Journalism student, and here’s my guide to the Sir David Bell Building! Whether you’re considering studying here or just want to see what’s inside, I’ll tell you some of my favourite spaces and the fantastic facilities available throughout the building.
The Sir David Bell Building is located on Roehampton’s Digby Stuart campus and serves as the home for the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The services and facilities within the building give students access to state-of-the-art film studios and editing suites.
As a journalism student, I appreciated the environment especially since the newsrooms replicate real working environments, allowing students to collaborate with their peers, develop practical skills, and gain valuable experience in a professional setting. It gave me a taste of what a real working office news space would be like.
In David Bell Building, you are also given access to MacBooks, paired with a variety of software programs you are given the chance to use, depending on your course. In my journalism course, we were given the chance to access Adobe software, more specifically, InDesign. This experience has strengthened my technical skills, adaptability, and confidence using professional software tools that can be transferred to my career.
The cinema room helps students by creating a more engaging and enjoyable learning environment. Mainly used by film students, it allows them to view their content on a larger screen and builds confidence in the work they create. Not many students would be able to get to see their work on a big screen like this, so I think it’s a great idea from Roehampton to incorporate this into the building.
The study room spaces are a highlight of the building for me. If I had a class with only a 40-minute break, I wouldn’t necessarily want to book a study room in the library; therefore, I would use the small study spaces located on the top floors of the building. These spaces would allow me to quickly settle in, get some work done, and then leave without feeling rushed. Having these areas available makes the building feel even more useful and student friendly.
Finally, the David Bell building is home to the kit room, where you can hire out equipment needed for your course, which is a staple aspect of many of the courses held in the building. It is an easy and free way that Roehampton enables you to get hold of professional equipment.
