Building my future in science: life as a Roehampton Biomedical student

Hi! I’m Denitsa, and I’m currently in my second year studying Biomedical Science at Roehampton.

Choosing Biomedical Science at Roehampton has honestly been such a good decision. One of the main reasons I applied was because the course is accredited by the IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science), which means that when I graduate, I’ll be officially qualified to work as a biomedical scientist.

In the future, I want to apply for medicine, but if that doesn’t happen, I’m considering further study like a master’s or even a PhD.

What I love about Roehampton

There are a few things I genuinely enjoy about studying here.

First, the campus. I spend most of my time at Whitelands, and it’s just a really beautiful place to be. We’ve got amazing views of Richmond Park, and between lectures I’ll often sit outside with friends or do some studying with that view in the background. It really makes a difference.

Second, the lecturers. All of mine are really passionate about what they teach. You can tell they genuinely care about science, and that makes it much easier to stay engaged as a student.

And finally, the extracurricular side of uni life. There’s a lot of flexibility, you can join or start societies, organise events, and even book spaces like the cinema room. It feels like there’s always something you can get involved in.

Making friends and settling in

I actually came to Roehampton through Clearing, but I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything. There are loads of events organised by the university and the Students’ Union, so it’s really easy to meet people. If you want to get involved socially, there are always opportunities – you just need to take them.

My favourite place on campus

If I had to pick one place, it would definitely be the outdoor area by the cafeteria, near the sports field. There are benches where you can sit, study, or just relax, and you’ve got the view of Richmond Park right in front of you. I love being outdoors, so that’s probably why I spend so much time there.

It’s one of the things that makes Roehampton stand out, you feel close to nature, even though you’re in London.

Life outside of studying

When I’m not studying, I usually spend time with friends, either on campus or nearby. We talk a lot about our future plans and help each other with things like placements and opportunities, I feel really supported.

We also go out locally to places like Wimbledon or Putney, depending on what we feel like doing. And when I’m at home, I like to relax by gaming or watching series.

My top budgeting tip

If I could give one piece of advice, it would be to stay organised with your money.

I think it really helps to set a percentage of your income or maintenance loan aside for savings each month but also keep some money for yourself. It’s important not to be too strict.

A lot of people try to limit themselves too much at first and then end up overspending later. It’s better to be consistent and realistic.

Career support at Roehampton

I’ve already had some great support from the careers team. They run lots of events during the year, and you get regular updates about opportunities. That’s actually how I found my current job as a student ambassador.

A busy event space with several people interacting. Two women at a table are discussing with a third woman, while others browse nearby. Promotional materials and drinks are visible on the table.

My advice would be to pay attention to the emails and opportunities you’re sent – if you stay open to them, it can really help, both financially and for your experience.
