Sunshine and the University of Roehampton go together like gin and tonic, but when the whole university wants to sit on Froebel Lawn, you may want more room to lie back, play some rounders or just to have some peace and quiet. Roehampton has plenty of other grassy spaces for you to enjoy, so here are our favourite spots:
Chadwick
Tucked away in the grounds of Grade II listed Downshire House, Chadwick’s sprawling lawn is home to the late Lynn Chadwick’s set of three sculptures, The Watchers. Standing at the far end of the grass, the figures stand at an impressive two metres and provide the perfect backdrop for a picnic. Cross over Clarence Lane at the traffic lights by Froebel Gate, walk along Roehampton Lane and the grounds are on your right, by the bus stop.
Whitelands
Away from the hustle and bustle of main campus, but still with plenty of catering facilities, Whitelands‘ field backs on to Richmond Park, and is a blank canvas with space to spare. If you fancy a kickabout, a game of rounders or some frisbee, Whitelands is the ideal spot. Head up Holybourne Avenue, between the Co-op and the Post Office, and turn right into Whitelands’ gates. Keep left around the outside of the main building, and you’ll be greeted by the lush expanse on the other side.
Digby Lawn
Since the completion of our award-winning library, Digby lawn has been back open for business, and is not to be missed. Conveniently close to the library cafe, the multi-levelled area benefits from views of the Digby lake and shade from the trees, making it an ideal area to study, sunbathe or eat. You could even make the most of being by the main gate and order some food in! Enter the main campus through the security gate and the lawn is right in front of you.
Southlands Quad
Taking centre stage on Southlands‘ area of campus is the quad, situated in the middle of the accommodation blocks. A popular spot for a few drinks in the sunshine, the grassy square is within a few paces of the Reef, where you can grab a bite to eat and bring it into the sunshine. Upon entering the main security entrance, turn right, walk past the lake and walk through the covered walkway between Queens building and the Southlands’ Chapel.
Chickens
One of campus’ most underrated green spaces is home to the Growhampton chickens. Garden Court‘s walled garden is a pretty sanctuary, ideal for relaxing, studying or having a quiet lunch. On the main campus, walk toward the Chapel entrance in Digby Square and turn right into the small opening next to the deliveries entrance.
